The Brooklyn Museum is exhibiting ‘The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk.’ It was mind-blowing and a must-see if you haven’t checked it out.
It features approximately 140 haute couture and prêt-à-porter ensembles displayed on custom mannequins with talking faces created through high-definition projectors. One of the first interactive mannequins you see is a replica of Jean Paul Gautier himself.
Loved seeing his sketches, stage costumes, accessories, films and documentation. Gaultier’s attention to detail is superb, and all his well-crafted garments are inspired by the beauty and diversity of global cultures.
‘I like difference. Perfection is relative, and beauty is subjective. I wanted to make imperfection admirable. That shows in my choice of models, among other things. Sometimes a different energy and bearing, or an unusual type of body, catches my eye and makes me want to invent something.” – JPGaultier
